KNITTING WOOL

Golden Gryphon has balls

and skeins of knitting wool.  Well, mostly skeins, but we'll wind them into centre-pull balls for you at no extra charge if you wish.  The wool is hand-spun and hand-dyed with natural plant dyes.   Our usual wool is 24-micron pure merino, very spoft and fine, but other breeds of wool can be sourced if desired.

$12 per 100g skein/ball.

Available in 5-ply (laceweight), 8-ply (DK), or 10-12 ply (worsted) equivalent.   Typical lengths are 120-130m for 5-ply, 80-90m for 8-ply, and 50-60m for 10-ply.

We normally do an order as a single dye lot to ensure the colour is consistent, so it's best to order enough wool for your project to begin with.   Although we will do our best, we cannot guarantee to match colours exactly later.  See the Steiner/Waldorf colour palettes or the wool threads below for colours.

Generally, we spin and dye to order, rather than having a large stock on hand.  It takes an afternoon to spin four 8-ply skeins, and another afternoon to dye and dry them, so be sure to allow enough lead time for your order!

Hand-spun wool typically varies in texture.  Let us know whether you prefer your wool to be as even as possible or if you like a more slubby or thick-thin look.

THREADS --  SILK

Pure silk 2-strand thread hand-spun and dyed with natural plant dyes.  Suitable for embroidery, tablet weaving, tassels, etc.   Close-up of typical card.

$6.50 per 15m card.

Please note -- because these are natural dyes, colours will vary a little from batch to batch.  If you need an exact match, please ask for cards from a single dye batch.

Commercially-dyed variegated purple silk.  This is spun from silk caps whose colour varies from pale blue through all the shades of mauve to navy blue.  It makes a lovely thread with variations in colour, perfect for embroidering flowers.  $7.50 per 15m card.
